We are proud to share this piece of Montville history with other artists, musicians & nature lovers. Nine Acre Woods is the original site of The Haystack Mountain School of Crafts; circa 1950 - 1958. The School moved to its current location of Deer Isle in 1959. As documented by the Portland Art Museum in the Vanguard Exhibit still traveling the country today.
The Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, at this location, was a renowned art school, where potters, painters, woodworkers, and others would come spend summers in communal art studios to perfect their craft! It was the first Art school that taught Raku style pottery in the USA. Serindipidiously, it is now owned by Colette Shumate-Smith- a Raku artist and painter that has spent her life both learning and teaching her craft!
